I was googling around websites (snooping around the competition) and I saw this headline "Help, I'm a bride and I need to be thinner", an advert for a slimming pill, which can burn body fat fast, at rates "never achieved before by science".
A very slick website, a "bridal special" and quite compelling sales copy. Everything to make the anxious bride-to-be get out her credit card for another quick fix. (as if you don't have enough to worry about). However, I don't believe that diet pills work at all, and in fact - I'm quite ANTI - diet pills.
Diet pills promise magic fairy dust that we can sprinkle on our lives, regardless of what we are eating or how much we are moving our bodies. They are the answer to our prayers....effortless weight loss!
Nobody really believes that, but marketing can have a powerful effect - particularly celebrity endorsements and great sales copy. Even though I know better, sometimes I see a great marketing campaign and think "that could work...."
No diet pill will ever really give you an amazing body without effort. Even if you see some results, what will happen when you stop buying it, will all the fat that "melted away magically" come back?
I don't believe in preying on people's insecurities to get them to buy a product, and in fact, I try and stay away from trashy TV and gossip mags because that's exactly how I feel afterwards - insecure and ready to part with my cash for something to make me feel just a little better. I remember watching an "Extreme Makeover" marathon and coming away thinking that I needed a nose job and probably breast implants if I was to be really and truly happy.
Diet pills make us feel like we're doing something wrong, that we need to be fixed by a man made solution. Worst of all, some diet pills can do harm - heard of "anal leakage"?. That's a common side effect of some best-selling (and government approved) diet pills - gross!
Imagine getting all thin for your wedding day, but having to wear an adult diaper down the aisle in your wedding lingerie? What about the wedding night, "oh, just a bit of leakage darling, don't worry".
Sorry for the gross imagery, but I just wanted to impress upon you, if you are ever considering taking diet pills, it's just not worth it and there is an easier way - I promise you can even see an immediate improvement!
My philosophy?
I believe in body acceptance and self love. Self love to me means loving your body exactly how it is right now, but also nourishing and taking care of your body to the best of your ability.
I believe that the natural outcome of that will be a healthier, probably slimmer and definitely happier and more energetic body.
Here's what made all the difference for me:
1. Eating real food that makes my body feel good, is good for the planet and helps me to regulate my weight naturally.
Michael Pollan says "Eat food, not too much. Mainly plants". As I've said before, I'm not an 100% raw foodist, vegan or call myself anything with a label. However, I aim to eat like this most of the time, and that works for me. This alone has given me freedom from any diet.
2. A mindset shift into loving myself the way I am, forgiving myself and my body for past mistakes and giving up guilt, shame and blame. This can be implemented right now, just choose to learn and grow right now.
That my friends, is the only magic pill work taking.
