Sometimes life gets in the way of our healthy intentions and we feel like we've fallen off the "wagon". Special occasions like birthdays, work events, holidays, Christmas etc can often be an excuse for eating badly, and some people deal with the pressure of a big deadline (hello wedding!) by sabotaging their own efforts.
For brides, getting off track can feel devastating because you've got that deadline looming and no hiding. Brides definitely put a lot of pressure on themselves.
If we've had a "bad" eating day, it can turn into more days, then a week, then "screw this, it's not working". Sometimes the hardest thing can be getting back on track to where you want to be with your eating habits, your weight loss goals and even just feeling good about yourself.
Even though it's as easy as choosing better next time, it can feel like an impossible leap to make, like a big chasm has opened up between where you are and where you want to be. Some days you can really visualise how you would look with your dream body, and other days it feels like an impossible dream.
Recently, I had a stressful week and there were some things that I didn't want to deal with. Little surprise then that instead of dealing with it, I ate three packets of potato chips instead. THREE! How's that for emotional eating?
Instead of letting that derail my healthy way of life, I acknowledged there was something out of balance and I got back on track. What was stressing me out was worrying about credit card debts. What was compounding the problem is that I didn't want to actually log on and see how much I owed. So instead of dealing with it, I ate food that made me feel unhealthy and low. After I realised what I was doing, I tackled the problem by coming clean and facing it (actually it wasn't as bad as it was in my imagination).
Find your triggers
What triggers you and gets you feeling like sabotaging yourself or giving up your new healthier lifestyle?
Is it a reoccurring theme - like you always overeat after visiting a particular family member, or around a certain colleague at work?
What are you not dealing with?
What's really causing you stress? Are you avoiding having a conversation with a family member, putting off making a wedding related decision, or just stressed about the wedding and how much it's all costing?
Try and name the problem, even if it's just to yourself and come up with some really quick solution to deal with it. The answer is not in the cookie jar, or at the bottom of a packet of crisps. (I know, I've looked hundreds of times!)
Here are some tips for you if you find yourself bingeing, craving something bad or feeling guilty over something you've eaten recently:
- Think about what is really bothering you and take one baby step towards solving it
- Take some time out - maybe the stress of the wedding, your family or worries about work are coming out in unhealthy and self-defeating ways
- Make sure you are eating enough good food, and drinking enough water so you aren't ravenously hungry and vulnerable to temptation
- Remember why you are eating healthily - to be a gorgeous bride and to have freedom from dieting forever, it just a journey
- Forgive yourself - you are not a bad person, it's just a bit of junk food, so what?
